This
is the first chair Peter Thompson designed and built in his furniture
shop. Apart from the front legs, which are carved out of four inch
thick stock, the rest of the chair is worked up by hand from two
inch
thick, rough, black cherry boards to produce this strikingly beautiful
piece. The unique characteristics of this chair create
elegant and feminine lines that flow together. The sweeping
compound curves of the front legs meet and are carefully wedged into a
deeply scalloped seat. Delicately curved leg supports rise off each leg
and attach underneath the seat adding strength. The seat,
which is hand carved from 1 3/4 inch planned cherry boards seems to
float in
air where it joins the back legs. Peter created this architectural
illusion by securing the rear legs to the seat
with floating oak tenons that are wedged and pinned in both the seat
and leg. The Walton chair is built using traditional jointing
techniques where the tenons are both wedged and pinned for added
strength. This chair has been designed and built to be passed
down from generation to generation. Finished by hand rubbing
oil and wax, each chair will make a beautiful addition to any dining
room.
