Peter
finds it exciting to occasionally sketch and build chairs that explore
the basic qualities needed to seat a human being. He enjoys
designing chairs that are broken down to the bare necessities of
construction and function....three legs, a seat, and enough lower back
support to make the chair comfortable to sit on. This is really
all that is required of a wooden item that has been born to be sat
on. After creating his Highlander chair Peter realized how little
is needed for lower lumbar support if the curve of the chair’s
back is designed correctly. The challenge is how to minimize a
chair’s construction and components without jeopardizing the
chair’s strength and attractiveness. Peter feels that he
has almost perfected his design study in minimization with the creation
of the Bora Kiti. This chair is also another of his studies in
designing seating supported by three legs instead of four.
The
front legs of the Bora Kiti are wedged where they come up through the
seat. Once again Peter has gone with a laminated leg support which is
mortised into the front leg and then gracefully curves up and attaches
underneath the seat. The seat which is hand shaped out of a lighter
colored wood is attached to a single back leg that curves up past the
seat and has a duel function as a back rest. Peter also allows a
customer to select between a back support that comes up close to the
back edge of the seat’s “highlight”, or one that is attached 3/4”
further back. The slight design differences are shown below. Beauty
is in the eye of the beholder, as comfort is in the back of the
sitter! Therefore it is up to the customer to choose which Bora Kiti
would fit both eye and back. |

This
chair is intriguing to look at and a pleasure to sit on. Shown in
Black Walnut with a Makore (African Cherry) seat the Bora Kiti (“Fine
Chair” in Swahili) is another gem designed out of Peter’s small cabinet
shop in Cornville, Maine.
Cost: $1,400 |
